Why Tab Hound?

I started developing Tab Hound because I wanted a quick way to search for a worksheet and navigate to it.  The Search feature of Tab Hound makes this process extremely fast, and allows you to jump through your workbook as fast as you can type.

Tab Hound has turned into so much more, and it will change how you work with your workbooks.  Not only will it save you time with navigating through your workbook, but it also automates common everyday tasks like:

  • Hiding/unhiding sheets
  • Copying & renaming sheets
  • Protecting/unprotecting sheets
  • and much more.

Please checkout the video above for more details.

  • Tab Hound looks great and I’m sure it will save me time.
Is there no SORT function for the tab display so that it will display tab names in Alpha order?
How / when will tab Hound be available for us?

    • Thanks Dan! That is a great suggestion about the sort feature. I will address this question in the next video, and I will add it to Tab Hound.

Tab Hound should be available in the next few weeks. I’m still putting the finishing touches on it, and getting feedback will really help. Stay tuned… 🙂

    • I also wanted to mention that the Tab Control tool will allow you to sort your sheet list in alphabetical/numerical order. It also allows you to sort based on tab color, and has a lot of other possible options for sorting. I will be sharing more about Tab Control in the next video.

  • Hi Jon,

absolutely a nice product, and I agree, with Dan, that it would be nice with a sort function.

Have you thought on having this product available in multiple languages?

A number of Danish companies does actually only give their staff Danish versions of Excel, and it is kind of disorder to have an English add-in.

It is difficult enough to convince them to install an add-in but if it was Danish it would be easier.

I will gladly help you with the Danish button translation – I guess you have no problems with the VBA part of the multilingual part.

    regards
    Jørgen

    • Hi Jorgen,

The multi-language idea is great! I think Tab Hound would love to travel around the globe… 🙂

I will definitely need help with the translations and I will contact you about this. For anyone reading this, please let me know if you would like Tab Hound translated into your language.

      Thanks!
      Jon

    • Yes, the Table of Contents (TOC) does include the chart sheets. The sheet list in the Tab Hound window also includes the chart sheets. So you can search for, hide/unhide, copy & rename, and perform all the Tab Hound features on the chart sheets, just like a regular worksheet.
      Great question! Thanks Frank!

  • Hi Jon,

Let me start by saying that this is a fantastic product and a real game changer!

I will definitely buy it and promote it to my colleagues as Im sure that they will find it as useful as I have.

    Thanks,

    John

  • I don’t have any suggestions to make at this time, but I wanted to drop a line and say Tab Hound looks to be helpful and to encourage you in developing it.

  • Tab Hound looks like it could save a lot of time with several of my files. Not all of them are out of control enough to require it, but it seems that when one of my workbooks gets too large, it gets VERY large.

I look forward to learning more about it, thank you for sharing!

    • Hi Heather,

I know the feeling with those large workbooks. The next video will show you some uses for Tab Hound even if your files are smaller.

      Thanks for the comment!

  • I really like the features of these add-ins and am looking forward to the release date. Does Tab Hound recognized the “Very Hidden” option for a worksheet? Thank you for your hard work. Saving time with these new features is GREAT.

    • Hi Michael,

Sorry for not responding sooner, I must have missed your comment. Currently Tab Hound ignores the “Very Hidden” sheets. I purposely designed it this way so the users of your file that are using Tab Hound would not see the very hidden sheets.

However, Tab Hound is the perfect platform to work with “Very Hidden” sheets because it would save you time from having to open the VB Editor. I am working on a solution for this and will let you know when Tab Hound has been updated with that feature.

      Thank you!

  • I use excel only at a very simple level, anyhow the flipback, multiple selection and operations either on tab color or other properties look very practical

    • Hi Dario,

Thank you for your comment. You are right, the Tab Hound features should be useful for any level of Excel user. If you file contains more than one sheet, then Tab Hound can probably help you. 🙂

  • question: if I share a file from an excel program that has tab hound, will the recipient be able to use this plug-in? … and if so would the def con 0 security alarms go off when he tried to open a sheet with a supplemental add-ins

    • Hi Greg,
Great question! No, Tab Hound does not travel with any files. It is installed on your computer and you are the only one that can use it.

Tab Hound does not make any modifications to the workbook that would prevent users from using it. So you can use Tab Hound on your workbook and still send it to other users they won’t know any difference or be limited in any way.

I hope that helps. Please let me know if you have any other questions. Thanks!

  • Hi, it is very good to see somebody trying to solve the complexity of managing Excel documents with many sheets. Are you still developing this add-in?

One question: Have you considered allowing the sheets to be set up in a tree structure? Even having the possibility of two levels, instead of the linear standard setup, would make it much easier to organize the tabs. The ability to increase the height of the Tab Hound pop-up would then also be very beneficial.

The user could then filter as before but choose whether the filtering is for all sheets in the document or only the sheets in the tree you have chosen (could be a check box below the filter)
