    Great video as always and simple explanation, thank you. With regards to the ‘sorting myth’, I have created numerous VLookUps and have always sorted the LookUp data in an ascending order because that’s what it instructs you to do in the dialog box itself when constructing the formula. Why would it state to do so if in fact it does the same thing when it’s not sorted? ARe you able to clarify?

    Whenever I have shown colleagues how to use this feature I have always stressed the sorting element.

    • Hi Louise,
      That sorting myth is kind of an old tip/technique from early versions of Excel. As computers got faster, we no longer need to sort the data if we are performing an exact match. In the majority of cases, the vlookup will perform very quickly with unsorted data. If you are copying the formula down thousands of rows, then the calculation will likely slow down. In this case you might want to try sorting the data and/or using a different technique for creating a relationship between data sets. I hope that helps.

  • WOW!, I learned a few new things about Vlookup. I use it all the time for reports that I have to combine to get all the information needed. For Example, one report returns the employee’s position but not the funding. So I use Vlookup to combine the information.

  • Hi John, brilliant video and very well explained. I am a transport manager in a large public service transport company. We use Vlookup to match the fleet numbers of a fleet of public service vehicles with their technical number, used for satellite navigation and also the fleet numbers to match the vehicle types based on the type of work performed by each vehicle.

  • I would like to use Vlookup in a macro. I want excel to look up today’s date in column A and return the message in column B. I want this to happen automatically when the user opens the workbook. I also want the vlookup formula to ignore the year.

    Very good video, I have a large number of spreadsheets to deal with, so I can use this to assist in finding a particular employee or vehicle very easy.

  • Dear Jon, Many thanks for sharing this video which is hugely helpful. Nicely explained. I am trying to use it for an invoice template, where the cashier will enter the product ID in the 1st Column then the Product Description and the Selling Price will display in the 2nd and 3rd column respectively.Need to use the Vlookup twice.
